Faux Fur Vest

I have been lusting for this vest for a few months now and my mom surprised me with it for Christmas! I love the mixture of purple and black faux fur on the mid-thigh silhouette. I also love that it's not entirely fur. I find that fur really engulfs you if you don't carry yourself in a very sophisticated I-rule-the-world kind of manner. I want to wear the fur, not the fur to wear me. I thought it would also be fun to match it with my burgundy pants to pick up more of the purple in the fur. I was also lusting over these boots for awhile and they finally went on crazy sale so I just had to buy them. They're a perfect buttery soft leather.

Goodbye 2013 Trends! You Won't Be Missed!

2013 has been a year of some interesting (to put it politely) trends. I think I've rejected more of the popular trends this year than in the past and gladly so. A lot of the trend inspiration in the past year was drawn from the 90s, which was definitely not a decade of great style. Have you ever looked at your childhood photos from the 90s and cringed? Well, that's what you're going to do in 10-20 years when you look at your photos from 2013. Let's discuss my 5 least favorite trends from 2013 and what should replace them in 2014.

1. Crop tops
Topshop
While some crop tops can look very sophisticated and classy if paired properly, they're still over-worn. I think this was an excuse for the extremely skinny to show off their bodies without being called provocative or other derogatory words. This trend rules out anyone with an ounce of body fat and reminds me of the "sporty spice" look.

Replacement:
What I'd love to see is a more modest crop top over a very high-waisted bottom. Instead of the outfit centered around, well, your center, it would elongate your legs. I'm picturing a slouchy cropped sweater with a pair of slim fit high-waisted jeans or a flowy floral maxi skirt.

2. Cut out boots
ASOS
The idea of cut out boots is cool and adds a funky style factor, but I think some fashion trends just don't function well. Boots are meant for cooler weather and to keep your feet warm and the cut outs absolutely defeat that purpose. You can't add fun socks to cut out boots because that will defeat the design purpose, but you need them to keep warm. There is only a very short period of time where the weather is right to wear these shoes.

Replacement:
Keep the ankle boots, but also keep the material around the ankle. I love the ankle boot trend and think it's truly a classic that won't go out of style. It's perfect for transition weather, comfortable, and versatile enough to go with any type of look from preppy to hipster.

3. Fur everything
Marc Jacobs
I'm going to blame this trend on Macklemore. After the song Thrift Shop came out in August 2012, the fur trend spiked. Fur coats, fur bags, fur scarves, fur vests, fur shoes, you name it - it comes in fur. I've always refused to wear real fur because I feel like you can never really trust that the animals weren't harmed in the process. I'm okay with faux fur, but I think one or two great faux fur pieces is enough for one closet. Fur is such a statement piece that you really only need one great fur coat or vest and mix up the rest of the outfit.

Replacement:
Go donate your furs to PETA because they're donating fur coats to the homeless. There's no way to go back in time and save an animal, but consider buying a vintage fur coat instead. There's plenty of them out there and the look of a long, luxurious faux fur coat is timeless. Keep ONE fur coat (if you must), although I must urge faux fur. I know fur can look better, but spend a little extra on a nice faux fur and your conscience will be clear.

4. Skorts
Nasty Gal
Seriously, how did these become trendy again?! These remind me of those awkward pre-pubescent middle school years and that is never a good thing. Vintage is always in, but I wouldn't quite consider the 90s vintage quite yet. These are essentially the opposite of cut out boots - all functional, no style. I get it; shorts under your skirt make moving easier and don't reveal your panties on a windy day, but I think for most of us, the 90s are too recent to repeat this trend anytime soon.

Replacement:
Shorts. Okay, okay, I know this isn't the most exciting fashion idea I've ever had. I'm picturing shorts that hit mid-thigh in fun J. Crew inspired prints. Their functionality is at a max and I think they could be really trendy in some sophisticated prints and styles. Why relive those awkward 90s middle school days with a skort when you can just wear normal-length shorts, which work for anyone at any age.

5. Sequin sweaters
DVF
This is the trend that makes sparkle lose its' shine. Sequins are supposed to be for special occasions like New Year's Eve or a weekend in Vegas, not for being a glam princess in a sweater. My inner 6 year old is screaming at my current self for writing this, but it must be said. I do love my fair share of sequins as you can tell from yesterday's shoe crush, but I don't think they belong on sweaters. If I'm wearing a sweater, it's to be cozy and comfy, not to be glam and fab.

Replacement:
Solid knit sweaters may have been more trendy this year than ever, but they will never go out of style as long as fall and winter exist. I think a solid knit sweater paired with sequined accessories would make for a great compromise between comfy and glam. Add a slouchy sequined clutch or sequin loafers to an outfit of jeans and a sweater and you're ready to face the day (or night).

Shoe Crush Saturday: Jean Michel Cazabat Loafers

My inner six-year-old is tugging on mommy's pant leg begging her to buy me these Jean Michel Cazabat sequined leather loafers. I can't remember a time when I didn't love anything pink and sparkly and these shoes are certainly no exception. These sparkly pink loafers instantly caught my eye amidst the hours I spend online "window" shopping. There's nothing I don't love about these shoes other than that I don't own them yet. I love the fuchsia shade, the pointed toe, the specks of silver sparkles, and the silver trim. I also love that they can dress up a casual outfit or add some sparkle to a night out. A dress shoe that's comfortable to walk and dance in all night - I'm sold.

Merry Christmas!

Sorry I've been totally MIA this week - I'm on vacation in Woodstock. For all of you out there that celebrate Christmas, I hope you had a wonderful holiday filled with family, friends, and food! One of my favorite holiday traditions, even though I don't actually celebrate Christmas, is going to Woodstock with my entire extended family and watching Santa come to town. I can't imagine a Christmas not in Woodstock. Everything here in the catskills is so simple and woodsy that it makes you be family-oriented, which is what the holidays are really all about. This year my family came up with several bags of old clothes, toys, purses, shoes, etc. and donated them to the local shelter/food pantry. I feel as though the holidays get people in the spirit of giving, so while you're in that spirit, go make someone else's Christmas bright.

I'm not going to post any outfits today, but I'm going to give you a glimpse into the Woodstock lifestyle that I get the pleasure of experiencing every year.

Pop of Black

I'm so sick of wearing black all the time. I can't remember ever wearing black as much I do now that I have a big-girl job. Just because I'm in the working world, doesn't mean my outfits have to be monotone. Today I refreshingly switched it up. The only black I'm sporting is my shoes. It was warm enough to wear ripped jeans so I paired the loose boyfriend pair with a more fitted bright green shirt and a delicate, silver, silk vest. I wanted to add even more color so I wore an orange vintage Afghani necklace. This strangely warm, but welcomed, weather is getting me in the mood for spring, so my wardrobe might as well get ready, too.

Shoe Crush Saturday: Sergio Rossi Closed-toe Slip Ons

Damn, these shoes are so hot. These Sergio Rossi pumps are the perfect finishing touch to any holiday look. If you can manage to walk in them, the 4.5" heel will make your legs look killer. The pointed toe will also elongate your legs. I am obsessed with the metaic blue color, which is certainly unique compared to the standard black patent leather winter heel. Rock out in these shoes for the holidays, especially NYE. Even make them your go-to party shoe for the season because they are a sure-fire knockout. If I could walk in heels for more than 5 minutes, these would definitely be in my closet.

All That Glitters is Gold... Or Maybe Silver

It's clearly been a week of fun tights for me. I think I'm more obsessed with these than the metallic ones I wore the other day. These are so perfect for the holidays. They scream holiday spirit. Since I won't be at work all next week, I wanted to dress for the holidays today. This is such an easy and versatile holiday look. My cozy winter white angora sweater, flared skirt, sparkly tights, and colorful accessories make it a great outfit for chilly weather, work, and even an office holiday party.

Save Loehmann's

If you know me personally, you know I am OBSESSED with Loehmann's. It's my go-to store for everything and the reason I can't pay full retail price for practically anything. Most of my wardrobe including some very high end pieces such as Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, and Helmut Lang, are from Loehmann's and I wouldn't even have enough clothes for  a style blog without it. Well, I just found out that Loehmann's is bankrupt and closing down. Imagine the sadness and panic going on in my head right now. Me without Loehmann's is like a car without gas. I couldn't function in a fashionable society without it (because I definitely don't make enough to pay the retail prices of most of the things I have). If you like designer clothes, handbags, shoes, accessories, and fragrances, and have never been to Loehmann's then I suggest you go to your local store or shop online IMMEDIATELY. They also have lower priced things, but it's essentially T.J. Maxx and Marshall's on steroids. The stores have more than online so if you can, go shop in person. I can't save Loehmann's alone, so help me out (for all the fashion fiends who love a bargain)!!

Last Minute Gifts

If you haven't done your Christmas shopping yet, well, you're not too late.
Honestly, Black Friday sales are nothing compared to the sales the week before Christmas. Yes, stores are picked over and you might not get your top picks, but you'll definitely save a lot of money, which I personally think is really important since it's the most expensive time of the year. You have one week left to snag some great items for your family and friends at some killer prices. I know gift cards seem like the perfect last-minute gift, but personally I think it's awkward to know exactly how much someone spent on your gift and it lacks thought. Go ahead and buy yourself a Christmas gift, too. Everyone deserves to pamper themselves once in awhile. I've compiled a list of some great last-minute gifts and some stores with stellar sales.

Navy + Black

Navy and black, once seen as a fashion faux pas as far as color combinations go, is now a smart style choice. Don't overdo it with when you're sporting this color combo. I would recommend adding one or two more colors to your outfit to make it more cohesive. Navy can be mistaken for black if it's dark enough and you never want to look like you mismatched blacks (that would give me a bigger heart attack than all those people claiming to need medical help after Bey dropped her surprise album last week). I've also been meaning to post this sweater on here for awhile. I usually pair it with jeans and my leopard flats (stripes and leopard are currently considered matching so live it up while it lasts).

Liquid Metallic

"Liquid metallic." That's what American Apparel calls my tights. I was a little hesitant to wear these when my mom bought them for me for Chanukah (because she knows metallics are in thanks to me), but I'm glad I didn't make her return them because once they stretched they were subtle enough for me to wear, but still bold enough to make a metallic statement. I wanted to really use how fun these tights are to play up my outfit. Granted, a white button-up blouse and a black skirt aren't exciting, which is why I chose a vibrant purple sweater, and wedges. I am perfectly aware that most people would say anything bodycon isn't appropriate to wear to work, but I think that as long as it's longer than your fingertips and it's paired with something more conservative (like a button-up/sweater combo) then it's acceptable.
